What is Shirushizome (Mark Dyeing)?

Mark dyeing is a technique used to vividly dye family crests, names, and other symbols onto items such as banners, flags, furoshiki, hanten (happi coats) , noren curtains, and stage curtains, making them clearly visible as distinguishing marks. Designs and colors are chosen to ensure visibility even from a distance.

This is a machine designed for dyeing large fabrics. In the past, the process was done manually by two people using boards like the ones in the photo. However, they developed this machine in-house.

I still remember my conversation with Eiji Sugishita when he introduced the machine to me. I asked, "Did you patent this machine?" To which he replied, "There’s no point in keeping such rights to myself. This industry is shrinking, so we need to support each other. I just hope that craftsmen who need this machine will be able to use it."

At that moment, I realized how shallow my question was, but at the same time, I was deeply moved by his generosity and open-mindedness.

こちらは大きな布を染めるための機械。以前までは写真のような板を使って人力で二人がかりで行っていたそうなのですが、自社でこの機械を開発したとのこと。

その機械を紹介していただいた時のやりとりが記憶に残っています。僕が「この機械に特許取られたんですか？」と聞いたところ、杉下さんは「そんな権利なんて独り占めしてもしょうがないからね。この業界も縮小傾向にあるからね、助け合っていかなあかんねん。この機械が必要な職人さんが使ってくれたらいいな」とおっしゃいました。浅はかな質問だったなと思ったと同時に、杉下さんの懐の深さを感じました。

Although the day I visited was during Golden Week and a holiday, Satoru Sugishita kindly waited for me to arrive and showed me the dyeing process. That day, he was dyeing a noren (traditional fabric divider). I was captivated by his skill as he effortlessly created a beautiful gradient using just a single brush.

僕が言った日はゴールデンウィークでお休みだったにもかかわらず、杉下さとるさんは僕が来るまで待ってくれて染めの作業を見せてくださいました。その日は暖簾の染をしてはりました。きれいなグラデーションを刷毛一本であっさりしてのけてしまう技に目を奪われました。

This shows the fabric being stretched tightly and dried. The rods prevent them from sticking to the fabric and causing uneven coloring.

これは生地をピンと張り、生地を乾かしている様子です。棒が生地にくっついて色むらができるのを防いでいる。

The Ōfunahoko of the Gion Festival

The students of Kyoto City University of Arts worked on the design and production of the tassel curtain of the Ōfunahoko and the costume for the music conductor at the Gion Festival. During this process, Mr. Sugishita provided guidance to the students. One of these students later joined Mr. Sugishita's company.

祇園祭の⼤船鉾 京都市⽴芸術⼤学の学⽣さんが、祇園祭の⼤船鉾の裾幕と⾳頭取りの⾐装のデザイン製作を行った。その際に杉下さんが学⽣さんに製作指導を行った。その中の学生さんが杉下さんに入社されました。
