As the successor of Okaju Co., Ltd., there is a family motto that says, 'Do not pick up the brush yourself.' This is because if you do, you will become a craftsman rather than a merchant. It reflects a deep respect for the artisans.

株式会社岡重を継ぐ者として、「自分で筆をもつな」という家訓があるそうです。これは自分で筆を持つと、商人ではなく職人になってしまうからであるとのことです。職人さんへのリスペクトで溢れています。

Regarding the costumes for the Miyako Odori

Since the first Miyako Odori (held in April), the company has been in charge of creating the costumes for the group dance. I had the honor of seeing the Miyako Odori shortly before visiting the company, which made me feel a strong connection to the kimonos, and I was deeply honored.

They are preparing 20 costumes for the maiko performing the group dance, and 15 costumes for the musicians and performers. They will need two costumes for a photoshoot by February, so the schedule is quite tight.

都踊りの衣装について

第一回の都踊り（４月開催）の総踊りの衣装の制作を手がけておられます。会社に伺う直前に、都踊りを拝見したので、とても親しみを持ってお着物を見ることができ、大変光栄でした。

総踊りを舞う舞妓さんたち用に20着、演奏方およびお囃子の方たちに15着ご用意されるそうです。２月時点には撮影用に２着必要だそうで、スクジュールがタイトだそうです。

An essential aspect of discussing Okaju is the 'han-ura.' Ha-ura refers to the design applied to the lining of a haori jacket. Because it is on the lining, they could freely design it, resulting in a variety of colorful patterns. This freedom of expression is said to have laid the foundation for the development of multi-colored dyeing in Kyoto Yuzen.

岡重さんを語る上で欠かせないのは「羽裏」です。羽裏とは羽織の裏に施されたデザインのことである。裏のデザインだからこそ、自由にデザインすることができ、多様多色のデザインが施されました。この自由な表現が、京友禅の多色染めの発展の礎を担ったと言います。

I heard an elegant story about Okaju. In the past, at tea ceremonies, men used to wear black haori jackets. It is said that the lining of these black jackets featured vibrant designs. They would even coordinate designs with their friends, such as deciding, 'Let's go with a dragon and tiger design for today’s lining.' The ha-ura can be said to reflect the Japanese spirit.

岡重さんに粋な話しを一ついただきました。お茶会の席には男衆は黒羽織を着ていました。その黒の裏には、鮮やかなデザインが広がっていたと言います。仲間内で「今日の羽裏は龍虎でいこうか」と打ち合わせをし、デザインを合わせていたこともあるそうです。羽裏は日本人の精神性を表しているともいえます。

Finally, I would like to introduce a collaboration with traditional Indonesian wax-resist dyeing.

Wax-resist dyeing involves applying wax to fabric, which prevents dye from reaching the areas covered by the wax, resulting in beautiful designs emerging. This collaboration involves transporting the wax-covered fabric from Indonesia to Japan, where the fabric is then dyed. It’s exciting just to imagine traditional crafts crossing the ocean. I had the opportunity to see the actual product. The delicate designs are adorned with soft, beautiful colors, creating a fantastical atmosphere.

最後にインドネシア伝統工芸品のろうけつ染めとのコラボレーションを紹介させていただきます。

ろうけつ染めとは、蜜蝋を生地に垂らし、その垂れた部分には染料が乗らずに、美しいデザインが浮かび上がるというものです。蝋が乗った生地をインドネシアから日本に輸送し、日本にて生地を染め上げるというコラボレーションです。伝統工芸品が海を越えるなんて想像するだけでわくわくしますね。実物を拝見しましたが、繊細なデザインのうえに淡く美しい色が乗っていて、幻想的な雰囲気があります。
